Getting There

Kavala has its own airport, Alexander the Great Airport (KVA), which receives seasonal charter flights and some regular service from Athens and Thessaloniki. The airport is about 30 km east of the city centre; taxis are the practical option. From Thessaloniki (2.5 hours by bus or road) there are regular KTEL bus services. From Athens, buses take about 7 hours; flying is the sensible choice for longer journeys. There is no train service to Kavala — the main railway line from Thessaloniki to the Turkish border passes through Drama, about 40 km inland, with connecting buses.

Ferries to Thassos island depart from the main port in the lower town; crossings to Limenas take about an hour and run year-round with higher frequency in summer. Hydrofoils also serve the northern Aegean islands in season.
