Imaret

Ottoman complex turned boutique hotel with 18 lead domes

The Imaret is a substantial Ottoman complex built in 1817 by Mehmet Ali Pasha — the Albanian-born Ottoman governor who founded the dynasty of modern Egypt — as a charitable institution combining mosque, theological school, and soup kitchen. Its 18 lead-covered domes, marble courtyards, and arcaded galleries make it the finest Ottoman building in Kavala. It has been converted into a boutique hotel; non-guests can admire the exterior and some of the gardens.
