Mohamed Ali House

Preserved Ottoman-era house in Kavala, birthplace of Muhammad Ali of Egypt

The Mohamed Ali House is one of Kavala's strongest links to the wider Ottoman Mediterranean. Muhammad Ali, the founder of modern Egypt's ruling dynasty, was born here, and the preserved house shows the domestic architecture of a wealthy late Ottoman household.

The visit adds depth to the old Panagia quarter, where lanes, sea views, and Ottoman buildings sit above the harbour. It is compact, but worthwhile: Kavala's history suddenly feels less provincial when you stand in a house connected to Cairo, Istanbul, and nineteenth-century power politics.
