Pangaion Hills

Forested mountain range west of Kavala, known for old gold mines, monasteries, and high ridge walks.

The Pangaion Hills rise west of Kavala as a broad, forested massif between the Strymon plain and the Aegean coast. In antiquity the range was famous for gold and silver deposits, and that mining wealth helped shape the fortunes of nearby Amphipolis, Philippi, and the Macedonian kings. Today the draw is quieter: chestnut and beech woods, mountain villages, old chapels, and views that open toward Thasos and the northern Aegean.

Most visitors treat Pangaion as a day trip from Kavala rather than a separate base. The roads climb through Eleftheroupoli and the villages on the lower slopes, while marked paths lead toward higher ridges and monasteries. It is best with a car and an early start, especially in summer when the coast is hot and the mountain air is noticeably cooler.
