The ruins of Philippi lie about 15 km west of Kavala. Founded in 356 BC by Philip II of Macedon on the site of a Thasian colony, the city was later the scene of the Battle of Philippi (42 BC) — the decisive encounter between Octavian and Antony against Brutus and Cassius following Caesar's assassination. The Apostle Paul preached here around AD 49, making it the site of the first Christian community in Europe. The site includes a large forum, a theatre still used for summer performances, early Christian basilicas, and a prison traditionally associated with Paul.
