Anilio Village

The small Vlach village of Anilio sits in the bottom of the gorge across from Metsovo, reached by a steep road or a footbridge over the river. Its name means "sunless" — and the village did indeed see almost no winter sun until a road was finally cut through to it in the 1920s.

It is now connected to Metsovo by a striking suspension footbridge and is far quieter than the town proper. Anilio retains a couple of old kafenia, a handful of tavernas with home-cooked Vlach food, and the small church of Profitis Ilias with eighteenth-century frescoes. A pleasant 90-minute round-trip walk from the centre.
