Katogi Averoff Winery

A short walk east of the centre, the Katogi Averoff winery is the project that put Metsovo on the Greek wine map. Founded in 1959 by Evangelos Averoff (the same man behind the gallery and the folklore museum), it was the first serious effort to grow international varieties at the kind of altitudes most Greek growers considered impossible — 1,000 metres and up, on terraces cut into the Pindos hillside.

The visitors' centre runs tours and tastings of the Katogi reds — Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and the indigenous Agiorgitiko — plus the surprisingly good rosé. The cellar is medieval-vaulted and refreshingly cool even in August. Book a tasting ahead in high season.

A story
Katogi was the first Greek winery to plant Cabernet Sauvignon at high altitude — Evangelos Averoff brought the cuttings in by suitcase from France in the 1950s, and locals at the time thought he had lost his mind.
