The Assumption Monastery of the Virgin Mary sits between Skala Maries and Maries and is a worthwhile inland stop on Thassos. The monastery is small, but the setting and the nearby ruined convent of Stavronikita make it more than a quick roadside chapel.
A short path of about 400 metres leads uphill from the monastery area, adding a good viewpoint and a quiet break from the island's beaches.
