Ypsario Mountain

The highest point of Thassos at 1,204m, Ypsario is covered in pine and beech forest almost to the summit. A marked trail leads up from the village of Potamia, gaining around 900m of elevation over a route that is demanding but not technical — good boots and a reasonable level of fitness are all you need. The forest is the reward as much as the summit: dense, fragrant, largely undisturbed, and full of birdsong from late spring through early autumn.

On a clear day the view from the top encompasses the Kavala coastline, the city itself, the Nestos delta to the east, and, on the best days, as far as the monasteries of Mount Athos to the south. The round trip takes around five to six hours from Potamia. There is no water on the upper section of the trail, so carry more than you think you will need. Early morning starts are best in summer to avoid the midday heat.
