Szent István Square Water Tower

Reinforced-concrete landmark from 1904 with occasional tower visits and views over Szeged

The water tower on Szent István Square is one of Szeged's best small surprises: a piece of municipal engineering treated as architecture rather than hidden infrastructure. Designed by Szilárd Zielinski and opened in 1904, it is an early Hungarian reinforced-concrete tower, softened by arcades, decorative details, and the green square around it.

It is not open every day, so check locally before planning your walk around an interior visit. Even from outside it is worth the detour from the main centre, especially if you like the practical side of Art Nouveau-era city building: water pressure, civic pride, and a good-looking tower all solved at once.
