Dunloe Ogham Stones

Roadside group of early medieval ogham stones near Beaufort and the Gap of Dunloe

The Dunloe Ogham Stones are a small but worthwhile stop on the way toward the Gap of Dunloe. The group contains eight standing stones inscribed with ogham, the early Irish writing system, and several were found reused in a souterrain before being moved to their present roadside enclosure.

This is not a long visit: ten careful minutes may be enough. It becomes much better if you know what you are looking at, so read the signs, trace the edge inscriptions with your eyes rather than your hands, and pair the stop with Beaufort, Kate Kearney's Cottage, or the Gap itself.
