Killarney House

Killarney House is a substantial country house at the entrance to Killarney National Park, just a few minutes' walk from the town centre. The house was the residence of the Earls of Kenmare and has been restored as a visitor centre for the national park. Exhibitions inside describe the park's natural history, geology, and the human history of the Kenmare estate.

The grounds around the house are particularly attractive — formal gardens with mountain views and direct access to the national park trails. Entry to the house and grounds is free. The walled garden, restored to its Victorian-era planting scheme, is one of the best in Kerry.

A story
The original Kenmare House on this site burned down in 1913, along with most of its contents. When the Muckross Estate (the second Kenmare property) was gifted to the Irish state, the family moved to this smaller Killarney House. After decades of disrepair, the Irish state restored the building and opened it as a visitor centre in 2016.
