The mountains above Bergamo offer some of the best accessible Alpine hiking in Lombardy. The centrepiece is the "Tour of the Refuges," a multi-day route that links a series of mountain huts (rifugi) across the Orobie Alps. The full circuit takes around a week; most walkers go hut-to-hut, carrying only a daypack. Book sleeping places at the refuges well in advance in summer — they fill up. Trails range from moderate valley walks to more demanding ridge routes with some exposed sections. The views back down toward Lake Como and the Po Plain on clear days are outstanding.
