A story
Donizetti was born in Bergamo in 1797 and died there, in madness, in 1848 — by which point he had written 65 operas. The theatre named after him was inaugurated in 1791, before his birth, which pleased him not at all. He called Bergamo "a city that ignores me." The annual festival named in his honour began only a century after his death, when the city finally decided to claim its most famous son.
