The hills and valleys around Bergamo offer some of the most accessible mountain hiking in Lombardy. The Valle Brembana, running north from the city toward the Orobie Alps, is the main draw: a long valley lined with old stone villages, bergamo cheese farms, and waymarked trails connecting altitudes from valley floor to high pasture.
The GTA (Grande Traversata delle Alpi) passes through the area, and shorter day routes connect villages like San Pellegrino Terme, Lenna, and Olmo al Brembo. Trails range from easy riverside walks to steeper routes up to rifugi at 1,500 metres and above. The Orobie Bergamasche Regional Park covers much of the upper valley and has well-maintained signage.
Bergamo's lower city is the practical base — frequent buses run up the valley. Spring and autumn are the best seasons; summer weekends can be busy near the thermal spa towns.
