The Obelisk of Terra d'Otranto stands near Porta Napoli, a slender 19th-century monument carved from Lecce's pale local limestone. It was erected in 1822 in honour of Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies, but today it works more as an elegant marker at the edge of the old city.
Pause here when entering or leaving the historic centre. The obelisk's reliefs and inscriptions are easy to miss if you treat it as traffic-island scenery, but they make a useful contrast with the heavier Baroque churches deeper inside Lecce.
