Lecce's Baroque churches and palaces are the main draw. Most of the city's highlights are clustered in the old centre, and the best approach is simply to walk — you will stumble on something remarkable every few minutes.
Start at Piazza Sant'Oronzo, where a Roman column and a partly-excavated amphitheatre sit in the open air. Work your way to Santa Croce, the most spectacular Baroque façade in the city, and the Duomo with its enclosed piazza — one of the finest squares in southern Italy. The Museo Faggiano on Via Ascanio Grandi is worth an hour for its extraordinary layering of history beneath a single house.
