Rudiae Archaeological Park lies just outside Lecce and reaches back beyond the city's famous Baroque face. The site preserves traces of the ancient Messapian and Roman settlement, including walls, necropolis areas, and the remains of an amphitheatre.
Its strongest pull is context. Lecce can feel overwhelmingly eighteenth-century in the historic centre, while Rudiae reminds you that this part of Salento had a much older urban life. It is also traditionally linked with Ennius, the early Latin poet, which gives the ruins a literary footnote as well as an archaeological one.
