Porta Napoli is Lecce's triumphal northern gate, built as a ceremonial entrance into the old town. Its classical arch is cleaner and more restrained than the city's famously exuberant Baroque church facades, which makes it a useful architectural counterpoint.
Use it as a starting point for walking into the historic centre. Passing through the gate gives a small sense of arrival before the lanes tighten and Lecce's pale stone churches, palazzi and courtyards begin to take over.
