The Church of Saint Mary Major is one of the medieval churches on Erice's Tre Chiese route, set on the slopes of Monte Erice rather than in the compact hilltop centre. It helps explain how rural religious foundations once spread across the mountain, not just inside the walled town.
It is a modest stop on its own, but a good one if you are walking the three-church route or tracing Erice beyond the castle-and-cathedral circuit.
