Beyond the beaches, Lampedusa rewards those who look a little further. The sea is exceptional for diving and snorkelling — visibility often exceeds 30 metres, and there are several wrecks within easy reach. Boat trips around the island are the best way to reach the remoter coves and the sea caves on the western coast.
On land, the island is small enough to explore by scooter in a day. The interior is scrubby and largely deserted, with views over the sea in both directions. The Lampedusa Nature Reserve covers the southwestern tip and the area around Rabbit Beach — a protected zone of coastal scrub, sea caves, and nesting beaches.
