Passo Pordoi

Passo Pordoi (2,239 m) is the highest of the four Sella Ronda passes and the most spectacular drive out of Canazei. The road climbs through 28 hairpins to a broad saddle ringed by limestone walls, with a couple of rifugi, a war memorial, and the lower station of the Sass Pordoi cable car.

In summer it's a cycling shrine; the parking lot is full of road bikes most weekends from June to September. In winter it's the natural lunch stop on the Sella Ronda circuit.

A story
The pass road was used as a stage of the Giro d'Italia more than forty times — its 27 hairpins from the Fassa side make it one of the toughest climbs in road cycling. A monument near the top remembers Fausto Coppi, who first crested it as race leader in 1940.
