Sass Pordoi

From Passo Pordoi (2,239 m), a cable car climbs in a single dramatic span to the top of Sass Pordoi (2,950 m), a vast limestone plateau on the southern edge of the Sella group. The summit terrace is one of the great Dolomite viewpoints — Messner himself ranks it among the finest in the Alps.

From the top, experienced hikers can drop into the Val di Mesdì or traverse to the Piz Boè summit (3,152 m) in about two hours. Off-piste skiers use it as the start of the famous Val Mesdì descent. Bring layers — it can be 20°C cooler than the valley.

A story
Reinhold Messner called the flat summit plateau of Sass Pordoi the 'Terrazza delle Dolomiti' — the terrace of the Dolomites — and the name has stuck. From here you can see the Marmolada, the Sella group, the Catinaccio, and on clear days the snowfields of the Ortler far to the west.
