Monte Bondone

The 2181-metre mountain on Trento's doorstep — Trentino's nearest ski slope and walking ground

Monte Bondone rises directly west of Trento, its bulk visible from almost every street in the city. The summit (2181 m) is reached by a switchback road, by the Trento–Sardagna cable car followed by a bus, or — for the energetic — on foot, on a long zigzag trail from the Sardagna terminus.

In winter Bondone is Trento's local ski area, with a handful of lifts and pistes centred on the village of Vason. In summer it is a walking ground, with the Giardino Botanico Alpino delle Viote — one of the oldest alpine botanical gardens in Europe, founded in 1938 — and a network of trails through subalpine meadows. The view east from the summit takes in the Brenta Dolomites, the Adige valley, and on clear days the marble flanks of the Adamello range.
