Klaipėda Lighthouse

19th-century lighthouse at the entrance to the Curonian Lagoon, visible from the ferry

The Klaipėda Lighthouse stands at the northern tip of the narrow strait where the Curonian Lagoon meets the Baltic Sea — the same passage that the ferry to Smiltynė crosses in five minutes. The current lighthouse structure dates from the 19th century and is still operational. It stands on the Smiltynė side of the strait, making it easily accessible on foot or by bicycle from the ferry landing.

The lighthouse is a good orientation point: from its base you can see the full width of the strait, the city on one side and the Curonian Spit extending south on the other. The area around the lighthouse, with its sandy shore and pine trees, is a pleasant walk from the Lithuanian Sea Museum. The lighthouse itself is not open to visitors internally, but the exterior and surroundings are freely accessible.
