Klaipeda's historic old town square with neoclassical theatre

The social centre of Klaipeda's old town, named for the neoclassical Drama Theatre built in 1857. The theatre has a special place in history: Hitler announced the annexation of the Memel Territory from this balcony in March 1939. In front of the theatre stands a copy of the fountain depicting Ann of Tharau, from the famous 17th-century German love poem written by Simon Dach, who was born in Klaipeda. The original bronze was destroyed in World War II.
