Church of Our Lady of Victories

Oldest church in Valletta, built on the day the city was founded

The Church of Our Lady of Victories is the oldest church in Valletta, built immediately after the Great Siege of 1565 to celebrate the defeat of the Ottoman fleet. Grand Master Jean de la Valette laid the foundation stone in 1566, beginning the construction of the entire city at the same time. The church sits near City Gate and is relatively modest by Valletta standards — the Knights put their major resources into St John's Co-Cathedral — but it carries historical weight as the physical starting point of the city.

The interior contains a copy of the icon of Our Lady of Damascus, venerated by the Knights, and a collection of ex-votos thanking the Virgin for protection at sea — a reminder of the maritime world the city was built to serve. The church is open at limited hours; it is most reliably accessible during morning service times.

A story
This is the oldest church in Valletta. Grand Master Jean de la Valette, who gave the city its name, is said to have laid the foundation stone personally on 28 March 1566 — the day he broke ground on the entire city. The church was built to give thanks for the Christian victory over the Ottomans in the Great Siege of 1565, and its name commemorates that deliverance. De la Valette himself was buried here until his remains were later moved to St John's Co-Cathedral.
