Hastings Gardens

Quiet bastion gardens with westward views over Marsamxett Harbour

Hastings Gardens runs along the northwestern tip of Valletta's bastion walls, above the Valletta waterfront and the ferry terminal for Sliema. The gardens offer one of the best views in the city — west across Marsamxett Harbour to the fortifications of Fort Manoel Island and beyond to Sliema and St Julian's. A monument to the Marquess of Hastings, a British Governor-General of Malta, stands in the gardens, though the real draw is the view.

This is a quieter alternative to the Upper Barrakka Gardens for a rest and a panorama. In the late afternoon the light hits the fortifications across the harbour at a good angle. The gardens connect to a walk along the city's northern bastions, which takes about 20 minutes end-to-end and gives a continuous overview of the harbourside below.
