St Paul's Anglican Cathedral

Neo-Gothic Protestant cathedral funded by Queen Adelaide

The first Protestant church built in Malta, St Paul's Anglican Cathedral was financed largely by Queen Adelaide, widow of William IV, who contributed £10,000 after convalescing on the island in 1838. The site was previously occupied by the Auberge of Germany, demolished to make way for the neo-Gothic structure. The slender spire is a useful landmark for navigating Valletta's grid. The interior is relatively restrained compared to the baroque excess of its Catholic neighbours, which makes it a calming stop mid-sightseeing.
