Triton Fountain

1950s bronze Tritons marking the entrance to historic Valletta

The Triton Fountain stands in the piazza immediately outside City Gate, marking the transition between the city's historic core and the bus terminus beyond. Three bronze Tritons — half-men, half-fish from classical mythology — support a wide shallow basin that was designed in the 1950s by sculptor Vincent Apap. The fountain was non-functional for many years but was restored as part of the 2018 Capital of Culture works and now runs reliably.

The fountain has become the default meeting point for Valletta and is visible from the bus terminus, making it a useful landmark for orientation. The piazza around it, opened up by the Renzo Piano redesign of the City Gate area, gives a clear view of the new gate, the parliament building, and the ruins of the Royal Opera House all at once.
