Lower Barrakka Gardens

Quieter bastion garden with Mediterranean views and a neoclassical temple

The Lower Barrakka Gardens sit at the southeastern tip of Valletta's fortifications, below and east of the more famous Upper Barrakka. The viewpoint here looks out over the mouth of the Grand Harbour toward the open Mediterranean, a very different prospect from the upper gardens' view toward the Three Cities. A neoclassical temple on the terrace was erected as a memorial to Sir Alexander Ball, the British naval officer who captured Malta from the French in 1800.

The gardens are less visited than their counterpart above, which makes them a better option for a quiet sit-down and views without the crowds. A short walk along the bastions from here takes you past the Saluting Battery down to the waterfront and the ferry terminal for the Three Cities.
