The Amersfoortse Kei is the glacial boulder that became Amersfoort's odd civic symbol. In the 17th century, residents dragged the huge stone into town for beer after a nobleman challenged them to do something pointless; after years of embarrassment, the city dug it up again in 1903 and embraced the joke.
