The birthplace of Piet Mondriaan, now a museum dedicated to Amersfoort's most famous son. The house recreates his childhood surroundings and traces his development from conventional landscape painter to the abstract pioneer of coloured rectangles. Good for understanding how a boy from a small Dutch town ended up changing modern art.

A story
Piet Mondriaan was born in this house in 1872, the second son of a strict Calvinist schoolmaster. He spent his first two years in Amersfoort before the family moved away, and never lived here again — yet his Dutch Reformed upbringing, with its insistence on order, clarity, and the reduction of decoration to essentials, runs directly through every grid painting he made in Paris and New York.
