The Lange Jan (Tall John) rises above the Lieve Vrouwekerkhof square and is the focal point of the city. The tower resembles the Dom tower in Utrecht in form and construction — both were built detached from their churches, though in Amersfoort's case the church is no longer there to be detached from. You can climb the tower for views over the old city and the surrounding countryside.
Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren
Medieval tower standing alone after its church was blown up in 1787
A story
In 1787, the ammunition stored in the church attached to this tower exploded, obliterating the building entirely. The tower survived and has stood alone on its square ever since — a steeple without a church.
