Oudemanhuispoort

A covered passageway between Kloveniersburgwal and Oudezijds Achterburgwal, lined on both sides with second-hand book stalls. The passage dates from the 18th century — it was originally part of an almshouse for elderly men — and the book market has been here since at least the 1880s. Vincent van Gogh browsed these stalls during his brief time in Amsterdam.

The selection is eclectic: art books, old maps, vintage prints, academic texts, and Dutch literature. Even if you don't buy anything, the passage itself is atmospheric — a quiet tunnel of books in the middle of the old university quarter. Open Monday to Saturday.
