Six Collection

A private art collection displayed in the canal house where the Six family has lived since the 17th century. The highlight is Rembrandt's portrait of Jan Six I, painted in 1654 and considered one of his finest works — looser and more intimate than his formal commissions. The painting has never left the house.

Visits are by appointment only, arranged through the Rijksmuseum (included with a Rijksmuseum ticket). A guide leads small groups through the house, which still feels like a private home rather than a museum: family portraits, antique furniture, and the quiet atmosphere of a canal-side mansion that has been in continuous occupation for over 350 years. The intimacy of seeing a Rembrandt masterpiece in the room it was painted for, rather than behind glass in a gallery, is hard to match. One of Amsterdam's most exclusive cultural experiences and genuinely worth the effort of booking ahead.
