Burgers' Zoo

Burgers' Zoo is consistently rated one of the best zoos in Europe, notable for its series of large enclosed biomes that recreate complete ecosystems rather than conventional enclosures. The Bush is a tropical rainforest under a 2-hectare glass roof, with free-flying birds, jungle vegetation, and a creek running through it. The Ocean is a coral reef aquarium with sharks and rays. The Desert recreates a Sonoran landscape with Gila monsters and roadrunners. The Savanna is a mixed African habitat.

The outdoor sections include Africa (giraffes, rhinos, hippos), an American section with bison and prairie dogs, and a mangrove exhibit. The zoo covers over 40 hectares in total and is located on the Schelmseweg, about 3 kilometres north of the city centre, on the same road as the Dutch Open Air Museum — the two are often combined in a full-day excursion. Allow at least four hours; the enclosed biomes alone take most of a morning.

A story
Burgers' Zoo pioneered the concept of immersive themed environments decades before it became standard zoo practice. Its Bush — a tropical rainforest under glass, opened in 1988 — was the first of its kind in the world: a complete enclosed ecosystem with free-flying birds, free-ranging mammals, and plants from the actual tropics, all under a single vast roof. The approach has been widely copied but rarely matched.
