GelreDome is the home stadium of Vitesse Arnhem, the city's Eredivisie football club, and one of the most technically innovative stadiums in the Netherlands. Built in 1998, it was among the first stadiums in the world to have a retractable roof and a sliding pitch — the grass field rolls out of the stadium on tracks to get natural sunlight between matches, then rolls back inside for game day.
The stadium seats around 26,000 and tours are available on non-match days covering the dressing rooms, press area, and the mechanisms that make the retractable roof and sliding pitch work. Located in the south of the city, about 3 kilometres from the centre. Attending a Vitesse home match is a good way to experience Dutch football culture at a reasonable price — tickets are generally available without the difficulties of the bigger Amsterdam or Rotterdam clubs.
