The Nederlands Openluchtmuseum (Dutch Open Air Museum) is one of the best outdoor museums in Europe, spread across 44 hectares of parkland on the north side of Arnhem. Over 80 historic buildings from across the Netherlands have been relocated here, representing the full range of Dutch vernacular architecture from the 17th century onward: farmhouses, windmills, a village school, a steam laundry, a paper mill, workers' terraced houses from the industrial era, and a 1970s suburban living room.
The museum is organised chronologically and regionally — you move through different periods of Dutch history as you walk through the grounds. Live demonstrations show traditional crafts including cheese-making, bakery, weaving, and blacksmithing. Allow at least half a day; a full day is not excessive. The museum also has an excellent 1950s canteen if you want to eat in period surroundings. Located on the Schelmseweg, reachable by bus from Arnhem Centraal.
