Van Gogh Bicycle Path

A kilometre-long cycle path between Eindhoven and Nuenen that glows in the dark, its surface embedded with thousands of tiny light-collecting stones arranged in swirling patterns inspired by Van Gogh's The Starry Night. During the day it looks like an ordinary path; after dark, the stones release their stored light and the path becomes a luminous river of blue-green spirals.

The path was designed by Daan Roosegaarde and opened in 2014, on the route Van Gogh walked between his studio and the fields he painted. Nuenen, a few kilometres east of Eindhoven, is where Van Gogh lived from 1883 to 1885 and painted The Potato Eaters. The path is free and always accessible — cycle it after sunset for the full effect. Best in autumn and winter when darkness falls early.

A story
Daan Roosegaarde initially proposed the Van Gogh Path to the municipality of Nuenen, who rejected it as too expensive. He then approached the NEXT Architects foundation and a crowd-funding campaign raised 150,000 euros, enough to build the first section. The municipality eventually came around and the path opened in 2014. Roosegaarde went on to design a solar-powered glowing motorway in Oss using the same technology.
