The neo-Gothic Sint-Vituskerk on the Emmastraat, designed by Pierre Cuypers (architect of Amsterdam Centraal and the Rijksmuseum) and finished in 1892, dominates the eastern part of the centre. The tower is 98 metres tall, briefly the tallest spire in the Netherlands.
The interior is heavily decorated in red and gold, with a Maarschalkerweerd organ. The church is still in use; concerts are held occasionally. Compare its high Gothic Catholicism with Dudok's spare town hall a kilometre west to feel the gap between two ages of Hilversum.
