Things to Do

Hilversum's headline attractions are its architecture and its broadcasting heritage. Dudok's Raadhuis is the icon — a 1931 masterpiece of brick modernism with a clock tower and reflecting pool — and the Beeld en Geluid museum on the Mediapark documents a century of Dutch radio and TV behind a glass facade of coloured panels. The Sint-Vituskerk by Pierre Cuypers gives the other side of the story: high Gothic Catholicism at the opposite end of the architectural spectrum.

Beyond the town centre, the Goois Natuurreservaat wraps the city in heathland, forest, and Bronze Age burial mounds. Anna's Hoeve is a closer, smaller park sculpted out of an old refuse dump. The Pinetum Blijdenstein holds the world's most complete collection of gymnosperms in a quiet residential corner. Architecture fans should follow the marked Dudok Walking Route through the residential neighbourhoods. For the odd and wonderful, look up the Wolfsdreuvik hidden in the Spanderswoud, and the giant ceramic egg in front of the Goois Museum.
