Louwman Museum

The Louwman Museum holds one of the world's largest and most significant private collections of historic automobiles — around 275 vehicles spanning the entire history of the motor car, from the very first horseless carriages to 20th-century racing cars and coachwork masterpieces. The collection was assembled by the Louwman family over three generations and is displayed in a purpose-built curved building in the Benoordenhout neighbourhood.

Unlike many car museums, the Louwman places its vehicles in historical and social context — there are sections on early motoring, on how cars changed cities, on the golden age of coachbuilding. The cars themselves are in exceptional condition, and the building, with its dramatic entry hall and natural light, is well worth visiting in its own right. Located in the residential south of the city, about 3 km from the centre. Reachable by tram.

A story
The collection includes one of the oldest surviving automobiles in the world — an 1886 Benz Patent-Motorwagen, the direct ancestor of every car ever made. The Louwman family also secretly concealed the world's oldest private telescope collection in a separate wing, comprising some 180 historic instruments.
