Castellum Hoge Woerd

A reconstructed Roman fort in the Leidsche Rijn district on the western outskirts of Utrecht, built on the exact site of a 1st-century castellum that once guarded the northern frontier of the Roman Empire. The modern building recreates the fort's footprint and houses a museum displaying archaeological finds from the site, including a remarkably preserved Roman ship excavated from the clay beneath.

The ship — a flat-bottomed barge used to transport troops and supplies along the Rhine — is the centrepiece. It was found during construction work in 2003 and is displayed in a purpose-built hall. The museum also covers daily life on the Limes (the Roman frontier) and the area's history from prehistory through the Middle Ages. The building itself, designed to evoke the fort's original walls, doubles as a community centre and theatre. A bit off the tourist trail but worth the trip for anyone interested in Roman history — and a reminder that Utrecht's story starts long before the Dom Tower.
