Self-playing musical instruments in a former church

Address Steenweg 6

Dedicated to self-playing musical instruments — music boxes, street organs, pianolas, carillons. Staff demonstrate the machines throughout the day, and the sound of an antique dance organ cranking into life in the main hall is unlike anything else in the city. Housed in a former church just off the Oude Gracht.

A story
The collection includes a concert organ from a Brussels dance hall that once played all night for the same dancers, and a French café organ so loud it could be heard three streets away. Several of the instruments were rescued from demolition or from fairgrounds closing down after the war — the museum saved them not as curiosities but as working machines, still capable of filling a room with sound.
