The Dutch national railway museum, housed in a beautifully restored 19th-century station — the Maliebaanstation, Utrecht's original railway terminus. The collection includes historic locomotives, royal carriages, and railway memorabilia, but what makes the Spoorwegmuseum special is how it presents them: immersive theatrical experiences, recreated station platforms from different eras, and rides that combine history with entertainment.
The Orient Express carriage, the recreated wartime transport, and a simulated journey through a 19th-century railway tunnel are highlights. Children love it, but there is enough depth and historical detail to keep adults engaged. You can even arrive by heritage train from Utrecht Centraal on special operating days. Allow at least half a day. The building itself is worth seeing — one of the handsomest Victorian stations in the Netherlands, restored to its original grandeur.
