The neo-Gothic main building of the Jagiellonian University, completed in 1887 on the site of earlier college buildings. The grand assembly hall (Aula) is hung with portraits of kings and rectors and is used for the university's most solemn ceremonies. The leafy square in front, with its Copernicus monument, is the heart of the university quarter.

A story
When the Gestapo summoned the university's professors here on 6 November 1939 for a supposed lecture on German policy, they arrested 183 of them and deported them to concentration camps — an event known as Sonderaktion Krakau, intended to decapitate Polish intellectual life.
