A monument to the great astronomer in the university quarter, originally standing in the courtyard of the Collegium Maius before being moved to the green in front of the Witkowski College. It is a favourite meeting point for students and a fixture on walking tours of the Jagiellonian University grounds.
Nicolaus Copernicus Monument
Monument to astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, who studied at the Jagiellonian University
A story
Copernicus enrolled at the Krakow Academy in 1491, and the city claims him as one of its own; the bronze, completed in 1900, shows the young astronomer seated with an armillary sphere, gazing at the heavens he was about to rearrange.
