Alvito

Small Alentejo town with a fortified palace, Mudejar churches, and whitewashed lanes.

Alvito is a small Alentejo town between Beja and Evora, quiet even by Alentejo standards. Its draw is not a long list of sights, but a compact group of whitewashed streets, Manueline doorways, and Mudejar details left by the long Moorish presence in the region.

The Castle of Alvito is the main reason to stop. It is more fortified palace than battlefield ruin, with Gothic, Manueline, and Islamic-influenced details. Nearby, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Assuncao and Chapel of Sao Sebastiao make the town's architectural identity clear.

Alvito is best as a slow half-day from Beja or Evora, especially if you like small towns where the reward is in details: arches, tiles, frescoes, clock towers, and the flat golden countryside around them.
