Gouveia sits on the western shoulder of the Serra da Estrela, high enough for wide views across the Mondego valley but still more town than mountain resort. It is a practical base for the northwestern side of Portugal's highest range, with stone streets, wool-country history, and a calmer mood than the better-known mountain villages.
The town's best surprise is the Museu Municipal de Arte Moderna Abel Manta, a small but serious modern-art museum built around the work of local painter Abel Manta and a collection that reaches well beyond the town. Just outside Gouveia, the Ecological Park and CERVAS give a close look at the wildlife of Serra da Estrela rather than just its views.
Gouveia is also close to Folgosinho Castle, a small hilltop fort in a mountain village that claims old links to Viriato, the Lusitanian resistance leader. None of these sights is huge on its own, but together they give Gouveia a clear identity: art, stone villages, and the first lift into the Serra.
